Brenda Villa

Bilingual Journalist

ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Brenda Villa, I’m an on-air reporter at KRGV in South Texas covering everything from Breaking news to immigration to education to feature stories.

My passion lies in telling stories that advocate for solutions and amplify marginalized voices.

As a morning reporter, I work alongside a photographer to bring creativity to our stories even if we find ourselves in the middle of nowhere in the early hours of the day.

I have grown to fall in love with the people, stories, and culture of the Rio Grande Valley – telling their stories and helping the cities and community advance.

I started my career behind the scenes to become a well-rounded and true journalist without the camera—to understand how the newsroom works from all angles.

As an assignment editor for KNBC in Los Angeles, I gained strong research and content-gathering skills.

Before working at the assignment desk, I worked with the NBCLA Investigative Team. During my time with the I-Team, I would go undercover, get M-O-Ss, and do deep research on companies and victims. I worked on various consumer stories including holiday grocery shopping tips, serial contractor scams, and travel insurance.

I received my bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism and a Spanish for Hispanic Media certificate from California State University, Fullerton in 2018. I also served as the Vice President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) Cal State Fullerton chapter and remain an active member.

I have been with KRGV for almost two years. I am knowledgeable in politics, economic development, immigration, and poverty.

I am confident that what I have learned and accomplished at KRGV I will make me a great addition to any newsroom.
